the 51 Shakti Peethas — sacred sites where, according to legend, parts
of Sati’s body fell after Shiva carried her across the universe in
grief. At Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, it is believed her womb came to
rest, making this temple a center of Shakti worship built around
creation itself rather than an idol.

Kamakhya is revered as the goddess of desire, fertility, and primal
feminine power — central to Tantric Shaktism, and a temple complex that
also houses shrines to the ten Mahavidyas. Her most significant festival,
Ambubachi Mela, honors the cycle of creation itself.
