Chinnamasta Devi is the sixth of the ten Mahavidyas in the Shakta tantric
tradition — and among the most striking. She is shown holding her own
severed head in one hand, drinking the blood that flows from her neck,
standing on a copulating couple as a symbol of transcending desire itself.

Her name comes from “chinna” (severed) and “masta” (head) — the goddess
who gave up her own head as an act of self-sacrifice. She represents the
mastery of ego and worldly attachment, and is closely linked to Kundalini
energy and the awakening of higher consciousness in tantric practice.
